The Kootenai Health Foundation, Inc. (a non-profit 501 c3 organization) was founded in 1983 to provide philanthropic support to help assure the long-term viability of Kootenai Medical Center in its delivery of health care services to North Idaho.
The Festival of Trees began in 1989 as the Foundation's primary annual fundraising event. The 18th Annual Festival of Trees which involves the entire community in healthcare concerns will be held November 24 - 27, 2006. It has netted over $2.2 million in its previous 17-year history for healthcare services and enhancements at KMC.
KMC is the largest employer in Kootenai County with more than 1,600 employees. KMC is the regional referral hospital for the five northern counties in Idaho.
Funds from the 2006 festival will expand the reach of health care services for those with cancer in our community..
The North Idaho Cancer Center is the leading provider of cancer research in the region - which provides opportunities for local residents to participate in leading-edge clinical trials of new cancer therapies.
When the North Idaho Cancer Center opened in 1987, they saw an average of 30 patients each day, with 20 to 25 new patients each month. Today, that number has expanded greatly to an average of 210 patients being cared for daily and more than 100 new patients each month. In 1988 there was one medical oncologist and one radiation oncologist, while five medical oncologists, two radiation oncologists and a nurse practitioner serve the Cancer Center today.
“The newer treatments for cancer are enabling people to live longer,” says Carmen Brochu, KMC’s VP of patient care. “It is being seen more recently as a chronic disease, so we are seeing patients longer.
“In addition, our region is growing and our population is aging. For all these reasons, the need for expanded cancer treatment facilities are growing and KMC is committed to continuing to meet the needs with compassionate care.”
